Meet some bid leaders

Business Events Sydney (BESydney) invites prominent and Australian-based professionals to help bring their organisation’s national or international conferences and meetings to Sydney and New South Wales (NSW).

These ‘bid leaders’ combine their insider know-how and contacts with BESydney’s support team and skills, to win these events for Sydney and NSW. Read about some of these bid leaders below.

Professor David Cooper, AO

David is Director and Professor of Medicine in the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research, part of the University of New South Wales. He was the bid leader for Sydney’s 2007 International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention, which brought 6,700 delegates to Sydney.

Professor Ian Caterson AM

Ian is Boden Professor of Human Nutrition in the Human Nutrition Unit and the Institute of Obesity Nutrition and Exercise at the University of Sydney. He led Sydney’s bid to host the 2006 International Congress on Obesity. This event attracted 3,000 delegates, creating economic, social and business benefits for Sydney. Ian has since presented at USYD International Conference seminars.

Dr Caroline Hong

Caroline is Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine. She was part of the leadership that helped Sydney’s winning bid to host the 2009 congress of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, an event that is expected to bring 3,000-5,000 delegates to Sydney. Caroline has presented on bid leadership at various associations conference panels and industry events.

Johanna Adriaanse

Johanna is a senior lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney, School of Leisure, Sport and Tourism, and Chair of the International Working Group on Women in Sport. She is the bid leader for the IWG World Conference on Women and Sport, a project she started herself in 2005. After partnering with BESydney, Johanna helped win Sydney’s bid to host the event in 2010.

Professor Michael Boyer

Michael is the bid leader for the 15th World Conference on Lung Cancer, won by Sydney for 2013. The conference rotates around the world every two years and was in Seoul last year. Michael is a lung cancer specialist at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

Professor Jeremy Chapman, OAM

Jeremy was the bid leader for the XXII International Congress of the Transplantation Society, held in Sydney in 2008. Winning the right to host this conference was a major coup for Sydney, and the event marked the culmination of a 10-year bid and preparation process. It brought 4,000 conference visitors to the city and injected an estimated AU$21 million into the local economy.

Dr Ian Watson

Ian was a leader in Sydney’s successful bid to host the 7th International Orthodontic Congress in 2010. This event win was a close call, with Sydney eventually overcoming strong competition from Seoul-Tokyo, Rio de Janieros and Istanbul. The World Federation of Orthodontics committee finally agreed that Sydney’s destination appeal and comprehensive bid put it over the line, supported by Sydney’s safety, security, and an ‘international intrigue’ for all things Australian.

Dr Noel Barton

Sydney hosted the 5th International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 2003, following a lengthy but ultimately successful bid led by Noel Barton in partnership with BESydney. Noel was working for the CSIRO at the time, but also chaired the Australian and New Zealand Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ANZIAM) Society.
