Green Sydney

Business Events Sydney (BESydney) celebrates and supports Sydney’s ‘clean, green’ reputation. Increasingly, our local and State Governments are proving their commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR), and we are proud of our members’ CSR activities.

Australia has long enjoyed a reputation for being clean and green, a big incentive for business meeting planners.

As the world’s biggest island, we are naturally protected from many of the diseases that plague the agricultural industries and wildernesses of parts of Europe, Asia and the US, and the Australian Government’s action in ratifying the Kyoto Protocol demonstrates our nation’s commitment to addressing climate change.

Sydney is Australia’s biggest and most cosmopolitan city, and is proud of its environmental and sustainable practices. As a city we aim to follow up on our natural ecological advantages, and our local governments help our citizens protect Sydney’s environment and communities.

BESydney fully supports the Green Meetings Industry Council’s 2020 agenda for what should comprise a ‘green meeting’. These are meetings that:

  • Have zero net environmental effect
  • Fully integrate environmental responsibility into return-on-investment (ROI) analysis
  • Are accepted and standard industry practice
  • Achieve economic and strategic business goals
  • Minimise or eliminate environmental impacts, and
  • Positively contribute to the environment and host communities

Long-haul flights to destinations like Australia produce less greenhouse-gas emissions than many realise. In fact, flights contribute to just 2-3% of emissions globally.

However, BESydney still encourages event planners to offer voluntary 'carbon offset' schemes to all delegates visiting our city, enabling visitors to compensate for any carbon emissions associated with their travel.

Finally, we are proud of the commitment that many of our members have made to improve the sustainability of their venues and practices. At BESydney offices, we aim to reduce our own impact on the environment, while contributing positively to our local communities.
